Emerging Architectures and Key Technologies for 5G Networks - AegeanNetCom2015

SCHOOL OF SCIENCES - Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering
19 Aug 2015 to 28 Aug 2015
Samos

The new era of communication systems and computer networking is moving towards 5G. 5G emerging technologies aim at the seamless connectivity of all types of devices, networks and communication protocols fulfilling the goals that have been set by the regulatory authorities and standardization bodies. In this way, technologies and services, such as Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Grid (SG), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, Smart Cities, Smart Health and many more can be enabled providing improved Quality of Service (QoS) compared to the current networks.

In the future, the number of types of interconnected devices will increase in an exponential manner. Therefore interoperability between devices and systems will be essential. Additionally, increased computation resources and yet less power requirements will have to be met. Inevitably, due to the interconnection of numerous devices and systems, "Heterogeneity" will become the main characteristic of 5G. Towards that need, technology integration will be an enabler along with the development of new techniques for even lower power technology and improvement of battery efficiency. Moreover, increased spectral and spatial efficiency is harvested through novel networking paradigms involving the use of unused radio frequencies through cognitive radio and the deployment and association with relays that allow multihop transmissions.

5G as a system doesn't entirely design and produce new protocols, but will have the ability to interconnect systems and services having as its final target to provide "Interoperability in communications and networks". But what is actually 5G? This is considered to be a critical question for many people that work in the field of networks. In order to fulfill that need this summer school has as its exclusive goal to provide a series of lectures and workshops taught by world renowned experts in the areas, such as:

  • Small Cells and HetNets
  • Energy and Network Optimization
  • Cooperative Technologies
  • MIMO Systems and TeraHertz Communications
  • Cloud and Pervasive Computing
  • Energy Efficient and Green Networks
  • Cognitive Radio Systems
  • Spectrum Management and Bandwidth Brokerage
  • Network Technologies and Management
  • Network Virtualization and Software-Defined Networks

If you join AegeanNetCom2015 you will:

  • Get acquainted with state of the art technologies in Communication systems and Networking
  • Work in teams in order to develop a detailed image regarding simulation procedures based on networking design
  • Familiarize with aspects and terms of Networking from research to market implementation
  • Learn about the life-cycle of a networking technology and the updating techniques in order to be characterized as future proof.
  • Have an unforgettable sunny learning experience in a beautiful Greek island

The program is designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students (already enrolled in a MSc/PhD program) from Universities in Greece and abroad in the fields of electrical engineering, electronic engineering, communication and networking engineering and related disciplines. Young and senior professionals that wish to specialize or update their knowledge in the area of communication and networking, are also welcome to join.

The interested students should first apply here, and then, upon acceptance, they will be informed about the payment procedure.

All educational sessions will be carried out in English.

All participants that will successfully fulfill course requirements will receive a "certification of attendance".

After the completion of the summer school all participants will have to write a report (5000-7000 words) on a specific subject, 6 weeks after the end of the Summer School. The report is obligatory for receiving 4 ECTS credits; otherwise 2 ECTS will be validated.
