5G networks are envisioned to be based on unifying and interconnecting communication systems, both wired and wireless, as well as computer networks, so as to provide a panorama of services with high speed and robust coverage at the user end. 5G philosophy, in contrast to 4G, is user-centric. Towards that idea, regulatory authorities and standardization bodies are setting new rules. 5G brings together technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Energy Grid, Smart Cities, Smart Health, Machine-to-Machine and Device-to-Device Communications. All the aforementioned technologies and many more can be enabled, providing improved Quality of Service (QoS) compared to current communication and networking technology.

In the near future, the number of types of interconnected devices will increase in an exponential manner. Therefore, interoperability between devices and systems will be essential. Additionally, increased computation, network resources and less power requirements in order to minimize GreenHouseGas (GHG) will have to be met. Due to the interconnection of numerous different devices and systems, “Heterogeneity” is another key point characteristic to be added on the architecture of 5G. Towards that aspect, the integration of systems and technologies will be an enabler along with the development of new techniques for even lower power technology, improvement of battery efficiency, Time of Use (ToU) and generally the dynamic management of the Operational Expenditure (OPEX) of the network. Moreover, increased spectral and spatial efficiency is harvested through novel networking paradigms involving the use of unused radio frequencies through cognitive radio and the deployment and association with relays that allow multihop transmission.

As a technology, 5G doesn’t entirely design and produce new protocols, but will have the ability to interconnect systems and services, thus having as its final target to provide “interoperability in communications and networks”. Taking into account the user-centric model which will be implemented by 5G, this idea is translated as “a Panorama of Services on the hand of the user”. But what is actually 5G? This is considered to be a critical question for many people that work in the field of communication and networks. From the educational perspective field of view, this summer school has as its purpose to cover that need, by answering the aforementioned question with a series of lectures and workshops taught by world renowned experts in the areas, such as:

  • Small Cells and HetNets
  • Energy and Network Optimization
  • Cooperative Technologies
  • MIMO Systems and mmWave Communications
  • Cloud and Pervasive Computing
  • Energy Efficient and Green Networks
  • Cognitive Radio Systems
  • Spectrum Management and Bandwidth Brokerage
  • Network Technologies and Management
  • Network Virtualization and Software-Defined Networks
  • Smart Grid Systems

If you join AegeanNetCom2016 you will:

  • Get acquainted with state of the art technologies in Communication systems and Networking
  • Work in teams in order to develop a detailed image regarding simulation procedures based on networking design
  • Familiarize with aspects and terms of Networking from research to market implementation
  • Learn about the life-cycle of a networking technology and the updating techniques in order to be characterized as future proof.
  • Have an unforgettable sunny learning experience in a beautiful Greek island

The program is designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students (already enrolled in a MSc/PhD program) from Universities in Greece and abroad in the fields of electrical engineering, electronic engineering, communication and networking engineering and related disciplines. Young and senior professionals that wish to specialize or update their knowledge in the area of communication and networking, are also welcome to join.

The interested students should first apply here and then, upon acceptance, they will be informed about the payment procedure.

All educational sessions will be carried out in English.

All participants that will successfully fulfill course requirements will receive a "certification of attendance".

After the completion of the summer school all participants will have to write a report (5000-7000 words) on a specific subject, 6 weeks after the end of the Summer School. The report is obligatory for receiving 3 ECTS credits; otherwise 2 ECTS will be validated.
